Real Estate Firm New Home Star Takes No. 2 Spot on Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work in 2018 List

No. 2 ranking highest for a real estate firm in Glassdoor history

Chicago-based New Home Star, which also has an office in Elmhurst is the largest private seller of new homes in America. Recently, they were honored with a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award, recognizing the Best Places to Work in 2018. The Employees’ Choice Awards program, now in its 10th year, relies solely on the feedback of employees via Glassdoor, one of the fastest growing jobs and recruiting sites. New Home Star’s No. 2 ranking in the top 50 companies with less than 1,000 employees makes it the highest ranked real estate company since the inception of the list.

“We are continuously inspired and encouraged by the positive feedback we receive from our employees through Glassdoor,” said David Rice, founder and CEO of New Home Star. “We celebrate our top two position on this list, but our vision is to build the best sales team in the world and we still have work to do.”

Rice noted that annually, the Glassdoor list of best places to work is dominated by tech companies, so it’s quite the exception for a service company to be ranked so high. “We’re a traditional service company that has the privilege of selling the American Dream of new-home ownership, while using exciting and progressive technology to engage our people and drive a world-class culture that rivals some of the most innovative tech brands in the nation,” said Rice.

Ten years ago, the housing crash changed the trajectory of the real estate industry and drove many potential job applicants away, but things have changed for this Chicago-based firm. “We see upwards of 2,500 applicants a month interested in a career with us, and most of our millennial candidates research our culture and workplace extensively before ever making contact,” explained Rice.

On Glassdoor, current and former employees of companies worldwide can share insights and opinions about their work environments by sharing a company review, designed to capture a genuine and authentic inside look at what it’s like to work at particular jobs and companies. When sharing a company review on Glassdoor, employees are asked to rate their satisfaction with the company overall, and key workplace factors like career opportunities, compensation, benefits, work/life balance, senior management, as well as culture and values. In addition, employees are asked to describe the best reasons to work at their companies as well as any downsides.

“We know today’s job seekers are more informed than ever about where they go to work, researching everything from company culture to career opportunities to pay philosophy and more. To help people find companies that stand out from the pack, the Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards recognizes employers that are truly Best Places to Work because they’re determined by those who really know best – the employees,” said Robert Hohman, Glassdoor CEO and co-founder. “Employers where employees love to work continue to prove that they have a recruiting and business performance advantage. We’re proud to celebrate the 2018 winners as we mark our 10th anniversary of the Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Awards.”

The Best Places to Work are determined using company reviews shared by U.S.-based employees between Nov. 1, 2016 and Oct. 22, 2017. To be considered for the small and medium category, a company must have less than 1,000 employees and have received at least 25 ratings across eight workplace attributes from U.S.-based employees during the period of eligibility. The final list is compiled based on Glassdoor’s proprietary algorithm, and takes into account quantity, quality and consistency of reviews.

ComEd Expands, Digitizes Itasca Substation to Meet Anticipated Regional Growth

Increased energy capacity to help power development of new data centers and western O’Hare construction

ComEd has broken ground on an expansion project at its Itasca Substation as part of a long-range plan to meet an anticipated need for more power in the region, in part due to expected growth in the construction and operation of data centers in the Elk Grove area as well as business in the western O’Hare market.

Features of ComEd’s newly expanded facility also will increase energy capacity within an approximate five-mile area—enough new capacity to ultimately serve the power equivalent of 80,000 residential homes. The new substation is designed with an “Intellegent Substation Dashboard,” which offers digital technology that makes it easier for ComEd to identify potential issues and respond quicker.

“ComEd actively supports economic development throughout northern Illinois, and substation projects, like the Itasca expansion, will help ensure the electrical infrastructure is in place to meet the region’s growth and future energy demand,” said Fidel Marquez, senior vice president of Governmental and External Affairs. “We look forward to working with prospective businesses like data centers and other operations who are interested in moving their companies into the area.”

“Elk Grove is one of the most desirable data center locations in the Chicagoland market and the new Elk Grove Technology Park provides additional sites for growth,” said Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson. “With ComEd’s electricity capacity expansion projects underway, existing and future businesses will have the confidence that power requirements can be met now and well into the future.”

“The western O’Hare market and projected growth of 65,000 new jobs by 2040 in the new Illinois tollway corridor is an important initiative for Choose DuPage,” said John Carpenter, Choose DuPage President & CEO. “We can now add ComEd’s substation expansion as one of the many reasons for businesses to grow in or move to DuPage County.”

ComEd has multiple existing substations serving customers in the area and goes through an annual short- (5-year) and long-range (10-year) planning process to assess expected load growth based on economic forecast modeling and actual customer usage.

Additional long-range capacity plans for the area call for construction of another new ComEd substation in north Elk Grove Village in the future.

ComEd’s grid modernization program, called Smart Grid, is almost complete and has contributed to record reliability for its customers over the last four years. Now the company is focused on implementation of the Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA), ground-breaking legislation which will build off the Smart Grid foundation to help move Illinois to a clean energy future and provide greater access to renewables, energy efficiency and valuable job training within Illinois communities.

Choose DuPage Economic Indicators Report

Choose DuPage Third Quarter Economic Indicators Report Shows Strong Climate to Help Regional Bid for Amazon’s Second Headquarters

DuPage County continues to boast low unemployment; lowest industrial vacancy rates in the region

Choose DuPage has released its 2017 Third Quarter Economic Indicators Report showing continued growth in DuPage County’s industrial market. Job creators and entrepreneurs are choosing DuPage County to build and expand their operations, while unemployment rates consistently remain lower than both state and federal levels. Data suggests DuPage County offers a business-friendly environment for a variety of industry sectors.

2017 Third Quarter Economic Indicator Report Highlights:

  • DuPage County has sustained one of the lowest unemployment rates in the Chicagoland six-county region at 4.4 percent, lower than both Illinois (5.2 percent) and United States (4.5 percent).
  • Industrial vacancy rates dropped another .2 percent from last quarter to 5.2 percent; DuPage County continues to have the lowest industrial vacancy rate in the region.
  • DuPage County‘s current top job opportunities include positions in computers and mathematics, management, office and administrative support, sales, healthcare practitioners, business and finance, and transportation.

In addition to continued industry growth and steady absorption of both office and industrial vacancies, DuPage County is poised for the opportunity to welcome Amazon’s HQ2 to the region. Choose DuPage is working closely with the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and Intersect Illinois as part of the regional effort to bring Amazon’s second headquarters to Illinois.

“The potential West Chicago site includes the DuPage Business Center near DuPage Airport, which would offer a unique opportunity for a variety of reasons – as well as the McDonald’s campus in Oak Brook, which encompasses 100 acres, provides tollway access, and meets many of the other requirements outlined by Amazon,” said John Carpenter, president and CEO of the Choose DuPage Economic Development Alliance.  “As I’ve said before, our low industrial vacancy rate has created an incredible opportunity for developers in the region – this is a prime opportunity, no pun intended, for DuPage County.”

Low taxes and operating costs, strong labor demographics, an educated and skilled workforce, proximity to hotels and dining, as well as shopping, golf and recreational activities are just a few of the benefits DuPage County hopes will attract continued business development for the region.

Applications Open for EDGE Tax Credit

Brewster Creek Business Park

Featured Property: Brewster Creek Business Park

Located in the DuPage County portion of the Village of Bartlett, Brewster Creek Business Park is a former gravel quarry turned growing business park developed through a partnership between the Village of Bartlett and Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Company.

Currently home to 90 businesses many of which reside within industrial condominium units in addition to the free-standing buildings, Brewster Creek will have 40 buildings totaling four million square feet with the recent completion of two more in recent months.

Industrial real estate developers Exeter Property Group, Ridge Development and G4 Development have recently completed speculative buildings, and Village economic development staff is partnering with the brokers in an effort to attract more quality tenants to Brewster Creek.

Emerging Food Cluster

Food giant Greco & Sons was the first major food distributor to locate in Brewster Creek Business Park, followed by Get Fresh Produce, Rana Meal Solutions, Cheese Merchants of America and candy packager creative werks in the following years. Thermo Fisher Scientific tests food safety in their Brewster Creek location. Each of these companies found Brewster Creek’s available reasonably priced land, DuPage County taxes, access to a strong workforce and proximity to State highways ideal for their Chicago area location.

Together, these businesses employ well over 1,000 and provide high-quality food products to many restaurants, grocery stores and other clients throughout the Midwest and the country.

German High-Tech Precision Cluster

Bartlett’s pro-business attitude has also attracted several high-precision German-based advanced manufacturers including Herrmann Ultrasonics, Wittenstein, Bremskerl and BBS Automation in recent years. With a newly formed relationship with the German-American Chamber of Commerce, Bartlett has welcomed these companies with open arms in a continuing effort to strengthen the Village’s tax base and increase foreign direct investment in DuPage County.

Automotive Cluster

Midwest Molding, Bremskerl, Winhere Brake Parts and Auto Truck are four Brewster Creek businesses in the auto supply chain. With Winhere Brake Parts relocating to Bartlett in early 2017, these companies have found their Bartlett location ideal to attract and retain a high quality workforce thanks to local workforce development programs.

Strong Workforce

Another competitive advantage of Brewster Creek is that innovative businesses have found the Bartlett area’s talented workforce to possess the training, education and skills to help their companies grow and prosper. The Village has partnered with local workforce development organizations including the Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership, Elgin Community College’s Workforce Development program and the recently-launched Workforce Development Center in neighboring Hanover Park.

Village Staff assists companies with meeting with one or more workforce development partners to help facilitate the recruiting and hiring of the workers whether entry-level, technically skilled or management professionals.

Open to the Public

You can board your dog, bring your pet to the veterinarian, learn self-defense and improve your fitness in Brewster Creek Business Park. Although most of the 90 businesses in Brewster Creek Business Park are wholesalers, contractor offices, manufacturers and other B-to-B businesses, Bark Avenue Daycamp, Bartlett Animal Hospital, Xtreme Training Academy and Frontier Fitness are open to the public in Bartlett’s premier business park.

Brewster Creek Business Park List

The list of businesses located in Brewster Creek continues to grow year after year, and should continue to expand in 2017 and beyond as the Chicago area industrial market continues growing.  From a logistics and distribution standpoint, Brewster Creek is ideally positioned for growing companies to serve their customers more efficiently while enjoying an attractive and safe setting for their employees, customers and vendors.

Rexnord Corporation to Build New Aerospace Facility in Downers Grove

Rexnord Corporation Downers Grove

The Downers Grove Economic Development Corporation announced today that Rexnord Corporation will build a new manufacturing facility and Aerospace Headquarters in Downers Grove. Rexnord plans to redevelop its existing site at 2400 Curtiss in the Ellsworth Business Park. Downers Grove was selected for the project following a national search. Rexnord, a 125-year old company, is a multiplatform industrial leader that serves a diverse array of global markets.

“We are investing in a new facility on our existing site to support the growing needs of our customers,” said Jamie Quilter, Rexnord Vice President & General Manager – Aerospace. “The new facility will provide upgraded technology and additional capacity – as well as provide our customers with an exciting experience and our associates with a unique collaborative and innovative environment.

Rexnord plans to build a 248,000 sq. ft. facility for its manufacturing operations and Aerospace Headquarters. The project is expected to be completed by 2019.

“I am extremely excited that Rexnord is expanding their presence in the Village and making this significant investment in our community,” said Mayor Mart Tully. “The development of their new state of the art manufacturing facility and Aerospace Headquarters is a big win for Downers Grove.”

The DGEDC worked closely with officials from Rexnord, as well as the consulting firm that was retained for this project: Cushman & Wakefield. In addition, the Village of Downers Grove, Community High School District 99, and Downers Grove Grade School District 58, were instrumental in the attraction of this project.

Amita Health to move headquarters, 1,100 jobs to Lisle

Written by: Alby Gullan | Published by: Crain’s Chicago Business

As Amita Health expands its reach under a big new merger, the health system plans to move its headquarters from Arlington Heights to Lisle.

Amita has reached a tentative agreement to lease 225,000 square feet in the Navistar campus in west suburban Lisle, where it would move about 1,100 employees from seven suburban locations, including Arlington Heights. If Amita finalizes a deal with the truck maker, it would be the biggest office lease in the Chicago suburbs in more than a year.

As it plots its headquarters move, Amita is poised for some other big changes due to another deal announced this week. Amita, a two-year-old joint venture between Ascension and Adventist Midwest Health, could more than double in size as result of Ascension’s planned acquisitionof Presence Health.

Amita’s move would represent a major triumph for Lisle, bringing more office workers to its restaurants and more business to its hotels.

“It’s going to bring a lot of people working in the community that are going to spend money in the community, so to me, it seems like a big win for the village,” Lisle trustee Anthony Carballo said during a discussion of the deal at an Aug. 21 village board meeting, according to a recorded video.

Navistar has shrunk so much that its corporate offices at Interstate 88 and Naperville Road are awash in space. The company employs about 1,800 people there now, down from 3,200 when it moved there in 2011.

In late 2015, Navistar hired Jones Lang LaSalle to find one or more tenants to lease half the space in the 1.2-million-square-foot campus. So far, JLL has found one: National Express, a transportation firm that signed a 54,000-square-foot lease in a building at 2601 Navistar Drive earlier this year.

A Navistar executive and JLL broker outlined the Amita deal in the Aug. 21 meeting because Navistar is seeking the village’s permission to expand a surface parking lot on its campus. Amita wants 5 parking spaces per every 1,000 square feet; Navistar currently can provide only 4.25, so it needs to add 176 spaces to accommodate Amita.

Navistar would add the spots by making them narrower and removing some landscaping. The company was asking the village for a quick response, because Amita wants some assurance that the city will sign off on the change by the end of the month, when it faces a key lease deadline on another property, JLL Managing Director John Musgjerd told the trustees.

Some trustees questioned Navistar’s request to fast-track the parking change, saying they were caught off-guard by it. But in the end, the board voted to direct village staff to draft a measure that would allow for expanded parking, to be taken up by the board at its Sept 11 meeting. That was enough to satisfy Musgjerd and presumably keep the deal alive.

Reached by phone, Musgjerd declined to comment, as did an Amita spokesman. A Navistar spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.

Under a 10-year-lease with Navistar, Amita would move office employees to Lisle from Arlington Heights, Bolingbrook, Hoffman Estates, Elk Grove Village and other suburban locations. It would start moving there next March, ultimately occupying three buildings on the north end of the Navistar property, Musgjerd told the Lisle trustees.

“The only reason for this office is lease is their desire to get all their people under one roof,” Musgjerd said.

It’s unclear if the headquarters lease has anything to do with the pending Presence merger. Amita operates six acute-care hospitals and three specialty hospitals in the Chicago. The deal with Chicago-based Presence would bring 10 more hospitals under the Amita umbrella.

The deal with Navistar, meanwhile, is good news for landlords in the west suburban office market. Though the second-quarter vacancy rate for the far western suburbs, 19.8 percent, was below the overall suburban rate of 20.6 percent, according to JLL, the market has several big blocks of empty space.

Big vacancies include the entire former OfficeMax headquarters, a 354,000-square-foot building along I-88 in Naperville; ConAgra’s former offices, an 189,000-square-foot building in Naperville, and an empty 206,000-square-foot building just east of Navistar’s headquarters.

The Truth Behind Business Migration

The following is a letter to the editor from John Carpenter, President & CEO, Choose DuPage

Here we go again. A recent article published in the Daily Herald by Washington Post writer Jonathan O’Connell, “Suburbs left scrambling as McDonald’s, other firms relocate to big cities,” continues to spread the false narrative of business relocating to city centers for better opportunities.

The article focuses on McDonald’s decision in 2016 to leave Oak Brook for Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood to attract a younger workforce and integrate better uses of technology. In truth, this migration should be seen for what it really is — a cost-cutting measure. While companies moving downtown will pay more per square foot for the smaller real estate, due to the reduced head count and benefit incentives, savings are realized.

Despite the misleading headlines, the western suburbs of Chicago are alive and well. DuPage County maintains the lowest unemployment rate in the Chicago region, as it has consistently for years and we are confident our skilled and educated workforce will fuel our growing business sector for years to come. We are excited for this opportunity to attract new residents and businesses to an impressive Oak Brook complex with a supersized opportunity in DuPage County.

Mid-Year Review Shows Continued Strong Economic Indicators for DuPage County

DuPage County continues to boast lowest unemployment and lowest industrial vacancy rates in the region

Choose DuPage has released its 2017 Second Quarter Economic Indicators Report, showing continued success for business and industry in DuPage County during the first half of 2017. Maintaining the lowest unemployment rates in the region at just 3.3 percent, DuPage County’s skilled and educated workforce continue to present opportunities for job creators and entrepreneurs seeking to build, expand operations in the county.  Data suggests DuPage County offers a business-friendly environment for a variety of industry sectors while the state and surrounding communities continue to navigate struggles with high taxes, pension challenges and a hostile business climate.

2017 Mid-Year Highlights:

  • DuPage County continues to maintain the lowest unemployment rate in the Chicagoland six-county region at 3.3 percent, lower than both Illinois (4.3 percent) and United States (4.1percent).
  • DuPage County‘s current top job opportunities include positions in computers and mathematics, management, office and administrative support, sales, healthcare practitioners, business and finance, and transportation.
  • Industrial vacancy rates remain steady at 5.4%; DuPage County continues to have the lowest industrial vacancy rate in the region.
  • Sales tax receipts increased by 1.3% compared to the same time last year growing from $314M to $318M indicating consumer spending habits remain strong in DuPage County.

“DuPage office vacancy rates have held steady around 16-17 percent in 2017, with industrial vacancy rates running around 5.4 percent – the lowest industrial vacancy rate in the region,” said John Carpenter, president and CEO of Choose DuPage. “Our low taxes and operating costs, strong labor demographics, proximity to hotels and dining, as well as shopping, golf and recreational activities are just a few of the benefits our community provides to businesses considering opportunities in DuPage.”

In addition to domestic company growth and expansions in DuPage, working closely with the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and Intersect Illinois, DuPage County has also expanded its global footprint with international businesses seeking to relocate, or expand operations, in the United States. Currently, roughly 800 foreign-based firms representing 40 countries are located in DuPage County providing workforce opportunities throughout the region.

DuPage County has consistently maintained the lowest unemployment rate in the Chicagoland region and boasts an AAA bond rating due to its strong economy, fiscal management and healthy budgetary performance. For all these reasons and more, DuPage continues to maintain a solid, thriving economy.
